How to Identify an Authentic Hand-Painted Madhubani Saree (and Spot a Print)

All products at our stall — sarees, dupattas, paintings, tote bags, journals & wall plates – are hand-painted originals | By Vidushini Prasad

If you have ever paused at my stall and wondered, “Is this print or original?” – you are not alone. It is the most common question I get. With Madhubani’s growing popularity, digital prints have flooded the market. They look bright from a distance, but up close, they tell a different story.

1. The Line Test – Look at the lines, not just the colors

Madhubani, especially Kachni style, lives in its lines. In a genuine piece, you will see subtle variations in line thickness and a gentle irregularity that printing cannot replicate. The classic double-line border is never mathematically perfect.

Authentic Madhubani Kachni work on Tussar silk - note double lines and natural wobble in hand-painted lines by Vidushini
Fig 1: Original Kachni on Tussar Silk — Notice the double border and slight wobble where the nib rested. The lines breathe. In a print, lines are razor-sharp and single. (Your image_a7639c.png)

2. The Color Fill Test – How color meets outline

In authentic Madhubani, flat colors are filled by hand with a fine brush. You will see tiny overlap where color meets the black outline, and slight variation in density — not patchy, but not flat like a laser printer.

Fig 2: Hand-filled Bharni – See how the red overlaps the black outline slightly? That overlap is the brush telling its story. Prints have perfectly flat, identical fills.

3. The Twin Test — No two motifs are identical

Madhubani motifs repeat, but never copy-paste. In my sarees, every fish, every parrot, every lotus has a slightly different eye, a different tail flick.

Fig 3: Motifs never identical – In this yellow Tussar, each bird and flower is slightly different. If two fish are pixel-identical, it is a print.

4. The Flip & Feel Test — 10 seconds at the stall

  • Feel: Lightly rub painted area vs plain area. Hand-painted feels slightly raised/textured. Print = perfectly smooth, sometimes dot pattern under lens.
  • Flip: Turn pallu over. Original shows soft shadow of color on reverse. Print = stark white back or sharp mirror print.

Why authentic costs more

A hand-painted Madhubani saree takes 7 to 15 days. We work on handwoven bases – Tussar silk with natural slubs, Chanderi, Kerala tissue and cotton – that can hold natural pigments. Every piece comes with artist signature and Certificate of Authenticity.
